Y strainer working principle
It works by filtering out debris from a fluid stream using a perforated or mesh screen housed in a Y-shaped body. As fluid enters the strainer, unwanted particles are trapped in the screen while clean fluid continues downstream. The collected debris settles in the strainer’s lower chamber and can be removed through a drain plug or by cleaning the screen. Strainers are commonly used in pipelines to protect pumps, valves, and other equipment from clogging or damage, ensuring smooth operation in water, steam, oil, and gas systems.
Applications
They are versatile devices that are used across numerous industries protecting equipment’s like pumps from blocking due to debris and dirt. Here are different applications of where the strainers are used;
- Water systems ( Pop up sprinkler, RAIN HOSE PIPE IN KENYA)
- Industrial processes
- HVAC systems
- Oil and gas pipelines
Advantages of Y strainers
- They are cost effective
- They are highly durable, allowing them to withstand high pressure and temperatures
- Prevents abrasion and damage to internal components, extending their lifespan
- Can be used with HDPE fittings such as Reducing socket, HDPE TEE COUPLING,HDPE Elbow coupling ensure smooth water flow in pipelines.
- The streamlined Y shape design minimizes flow resistance, preserving system efficiency
- Occupies minimal space
Y strainer Vs basket strainer
| Y strainer | Basket strainer |
| Filters out small to medium debris | Handles large volume of debris |
| Can be installed in either vertically or horizontally | Only installed in horizontal positions |
| It’s a Y shaped strainer with a side mounted screen | Has a cylindrical body with a basket shaped screen |
| During cleaning, only the side cap is opened without shutting the entire system | Requires system shut down when cleaning of the debris |
| Occupies less space | Occupies more space |
