Pressure reducing valve working principle
Fluid under high pressure enters the valve through the inlet. As it flows toward the outlet, the spring and diaphragm mechanism sense the outlet pressure and adjust the valve opening accordingly. If the outlet pressure is too high, the diaphragm compresses the spring, partially closing the valve to restrict flow. If the outlet pressure is too low, the spring expands, opening the valve to allow more flow. This continuous adjustment maintains a stable, pre-set outlet pressure.
Different types of pressure reducing valve
- Direct acting valve: Has a simple and compact design
- Pilot operated valve: Handles high flow rates and pressure variations
- Diaphragm pressure reducing valve: Works well in low to medium pressure systems
- Adjustable reducing valve: Provides flexibility for different pressure ratings
Major components and their functions
- Inlet port: The point where the inlet pressure enters the valve
- Outlet port: Is the point where the reduced pressure exists the valve
- Diaphragm: It moves in response to the fluctuations of the outlet pressure
- Spring: Provides a counterforce against the diaphragm
- Disc: Controls fluid flow to maintain pressure stability
- Seals: Prevents leaks between components
Applications of pressure reducing valve
- Steam systems
- Plumbing systems
- Gas distribution networks
- Water distribution systems
- Industrial processes
Selection Criteria for Pressure Reducing Valves
Before purchasing, one can consider the following;
- Body material
- The required size
- Media type
- Pressure requirements
- Temperature range
- Connection type (flanged and threaded)
- Valve type
- Environmental factors
Advantages of pressure reducing valve
- Reduces water hammer in pipelines
- It extends equipment lifespan
- Works well with drip irrigation, sprinkler systems (Pop up sprinkler ), and pivot irrigation, RAIN HOSE PIPE.
- It conserves water, this in turn reduces water loss
- Pressure reducing valve can be connected in parallel, two-stage, or normal configurations, depending on the application and desired pressure control
- It’s simple to install
- Maintains consistent outlet pressure by customizing the outlet pressure to match systems requirements
Common challenges faced with pressure reducing valves
- Requires regular maintenance on diaphragms, seals and springs
- Extreme temperatures can affect various parts of the valve like seals
- Incorrect installation may lead to leaks\ failures
Installation and maintenance
Pressure reducing valves are essential for proper pressure control but require the right installation process and maintenance in order to maximize its benefits and minimize operational risks. Here are some of things one can consider
- Ensure the strainers are cleaned
- Inspect the seals for any sign of wear and tear
- Periodically recalibrate the pressure settings
- During installation, install filters to prevent clogging
Pressure reducing valve price in Kenya
