Foot valve
Foot valve| For top-tier, durable, and high-performance foot valves, Hortitechno stands out as the best supplier in the industry, offering premium solutions that ensure seamless water flow, reduced energy loss, and superior durability.
Specifications of foot valve
- Size: available in 3’’, 4’’, 6’’, 8’’
- Pressure: PN 16
- Weight: varies from 8 to 33 kgs, this depends on the size
- Connection: It is flanged at the end
Key features of foot valve
- Allows one- way flow
- It is a submerged type of valve
- Made from durable, corrosion- resistant material
- Has self-prime capability
- Ensures proper closing when the pump is off
- Available in both flanged and threaded end connection.
- Can be used in submain’s pipe connections with HDPE fittings during installation. This includes: Reducing socket, saddle clamps, HDPE Elbow coupling, adaptors, HDPE TEE COUPLING etc.
Types of foot valve
- Spring loaded
- Flap type
- Ball type
- PVC type
Various components
- Valve body: The main housing that encases all internal component, typically made from either stainless steel, PVC, brass.
- Strainer: It’s a perforated filter attached to the inlet, preventing debris or any other foreign particles from entering the pump that may cause damage
- Disc\flap: Moves with the flow of liquids, allows unidirectional flow. Prevents backflow when the valve is closed
- Spring: Assists in rapidly closing the pump when it turned off, enhancing sealing efficiency
- Gasket/ seals: Offers a tight connection between components, preventing leaks.
How foot valve works
When the pump runs, it sucks water up the pipe, which opens the valve to let water flow into the system. When the pump stops, gravity or back pressure slams the valve, stopping water from flowing backward. This keeps the pipe primed so the pump doesn’t strain when opened again. A built-in strainer blocks any particles from clogging the system.
Foot valve for water pump
Its installed mainly at the bottom end of the suction pipe, submerged in the water source this can either be in wells, tanks or ponds. As water flows, it passes through a check mechanism that opens the pump, water gets sucked up through the valve into the pipe. The pipe further distributes water in a reservoir. When the pump stops, the check mechanism resists any further flow of water, this traps water into the pipe, stopping it from draining back into the source.
It’s an essential device in pumps, since it prevents the pump from running dry. They can be used in irrigation systems such as pop up sprinkler, subsurface irrigation, rain hose ,drip systems
Applications
- Irrigation systems; keeps pumps primed in wells, ensuring consistent flow when turned on
- Firefighting systems; guarantees immediate water availability in case of any emergencies
- Industrial use; protects pumps in factories from debris and backflow
Comparison with other types of check valves
| Type of valve | Flow of water | Operation |
| Foot valve | One way | Spring-loaded or gravity-based |
| Swing check valve | One way | Hinged flap opens/closes with flow |
| Ball valve | Two ways | Rotating ball with a hole |
Advantages of using foot valve
- Requires low maintenance
- Compatible with different piping systems
- Stops reverse flow, which could damage the pump or disrupt the system
- Built to endure abrasion and high pressures
- The foot valve is self-actuating as it relies on pressure and gravity for closure
